QUESTION 1; USEFULNESS. How useful is this source in explaining ….. 8 MARKS

Top Tip; focus on what is useful about the source and write positively. Don’t focus on what it does not tell you. What can you LEARN from it about the past/time period?

​

C = Content (what it says or shows that helps you learn something)

O= Own Knowledge (does it match you knowledge of the time? Try to say 2 factual pieces of information about the time that are matched by the source)

P= Provenance (5 Ws – who, when, why, what, where?) Why is this useful? How does it help us understand the perspective or views of a certain group or person?

I = Inference (what does it suggest, hint or imply?) Is there a more subtle message we can learn?

TOP TIPS

The events will usually be far apart in history. Read the question carefully. It will usually specify to focus on similarities, but it may say differences….

CDC

Causes – what caused the protests to happen? Are they caused by similar factors or reasons?

Development – What was the story – what happened – were they peaceful or violent? How much of a threat to authority were they?

Consequences – What was the outcome of each event? Was any authority lost by the crown or parliament in each case?

QUESTION 4; THE MAIN FACTOR QUESTION 16 MARKS PLUS 4 SP&G (20)

 

Has ………………… been the main factor in the cause of protest in Britain in……….. (it may specify a time period such as 19th and 20th century or it may say over time) read the question carefully.

 

How to structure your work…

You can use the “2 hands and an I” for this type of answer

One the one hand …………………. could be seen as the main cause…..For example…..

One the other hand, there are a number of other factors that have caused protest.. Firstly…..  Secondly…….. Thirdly

Overall I think that (directly answer the question here and compare the impact of the factors in your explanation). In many cases the cause of protest is a combination of several factors. Try to link them or argue why one factor is more important with evidence to back up your reasons.

QUESTION 1 – the source interpretation question. 8 MARKS

“How convincing is interpretation ….. about…..?”  (convincing means accurate or reliable)

 

TIPS

Read/look at the source carefully. It gives you one view or one reason for something.

ANSWER STRUCTURE

  1. Sum up what the source tells you briefly.

  2. Which aspects of it do you agree with? How are they accurate or convincing?

  3. Which aspects of it do you disagree with? Why? Does it give a fair and full explanation? Are there other reasons or factors that have not been mentioned or information that has been left out?

  4. Reach a judgement – how convincing is it? Very, quite, fairly, not very….

TIPS

Use knowledge that is relevant to the question

Use specific factual examples of the aspect mentioned in the question (e.g. exploration)

Explain the impact or consequences

Think about the wider events happening in Elizabethan England and how the aspect mentioned in the question links to them

“Write an account of…”

​

TIPS

Read the question carefully – it is not just a description. It might be asking about change, or how people at the time felt about things or dealt with problems or the career of an individual person…

Write an organised and structured answer

Select relevant knowledge

Use plenty of factual detail and specific examples, including key dates

Think about the importance of the aspect given in the question, the consequences or links to wider context of Elizabethan England if you can.

 

ANSWER STRUCTURE

1 - 2 detailed paragraphs which answer the question in an organised way, e.g. chronologically or explaining at least 3 problems, changes, points depending on what the question asks

QUESTION 4 HISTORICAL LOCATION QUESTION 16 MARKS

EXAMPLE QUESTION: “The main reason for building a stately home in Elizabethan times was to demonstrate the wealth of its owner”

 How far does a study of Hardwick Hall support this statement? You should refer to Hardwick Hall and your contextual knowledge.

 

  • PARAGRAPH 1: Context – why was there a building craze in the Elizabethan period? Who were the Gentry? How did they become rich? Why did they build?

  • P2:  Hardwick Hall background – who built Hardwick Hall, when and why? How did Bess of Hardwick become rich?

  • P3: Hardwick Hall architecture – what features at Hardwick Hall show the wealth of Bess? Pick out and explain as many internal and external features as you can.

  • P4: Conclude and answer the question – does Hardwick Hall show the wealth of Bess of Hardwick? Was this the main purpose of why she built it? Does it reflect fashions and values of the time?
